About Kelly
I live and work on the plains of the Snowy Monaro in Michelago, NSW. Ngarigo country.
I'm a self taught painter drawn principally to oils. Like many oil painters (I suspect) I love everything about the act of painting - the smell, texture, colour, the feel of the canvas and the sound the brushes make.
For a long time I focused on portraiture but have recently been working on landscape, moving toward abstraction. We have a big beautiful sky in this country and land that rises and falls as far as the eye can see. Being in it is a pleasure, painting a privilege.
I work in a painterly style and find inspiration in the work of many classical and modern painters, but there's a lot to be said for our Australian painters. So much depth, such a diverse pool of views and perspectives - enriching and enriched.
I work hard to keep my technique loose and free flowing while retaining structure to support the work. You need a bit of chaos in order to keep a scene loose enough to evoke life and movement. Easier said than done.
I try to learn from all that I see and, in understanding the work of others, to create a style, a perspective and an insight that is uniquely my own.
